Bitcoin Running Shirt Hal Finney - Running Bitcoin Back Print
The Bitcoin Running Shirt Hal Finney is a light performance shirt made of 100% polyester at 135 g/m², moisture-wicking and stretchy, with mesh panels on the back and under the arms. Crew neck, short raglan sleeves, UV protection 40+. Made for running, but it works just as well in the gym or as a first layer under a jacket. On the back is a sentence from January 2009.
It was written by Hal Finney. Two words, no punctuation, no explanation: “Running bitcoin”. On his computer ran the client that Satoshi Nakamoto had published a few days earlier. In 2009 that was a single program: node, wallet and mining in one. So Finney did not just run a node, he mined as well: “Block 70 or so”, as he later put it. One day later Satoshi sent him ten Bitcoin. The first transfer there ever was, recorded in Block 170.
What makes the sentence bigger than a status message: in 2009 Finney was running himself. He had lost weight, had several half marathons behind him and was training for his first marathon, “in the best shape of my life”, as he later put it. In August of the same year he was diagnosed with ALS.
Seventeen days after that diagnosis he ran another half marathon. On September 6, 2009, together with his wife Fran, hand in hand across the finish line, in 1:59:27. It was his last race. Three months later he could no longer run and covered the last two miles of a marathon with a cane, his wife at his side. On August 28, 2014 he died, at 58.
That is exactly why this is not a merch motif for us but a mindset. “Running bitcoin” means: run a node instead of trusting. Look after the body you are going to live in for the next few decades. And take one more step when it gets uncomfortable: first jogging, then on a cane, then with your eyes. What you do every day is what you are.
Hal Finney – First runner. First believer. Forever a legend.
That is why this sentence is on a running shirt with us and not on a T-shirt. Twice, in fact: here as a large motif across the back, on the Bitcoin Running Shirt Running Bitcoin as a quiet lettering. Same shirt, same cut, same fabric, only a different print. Black, Charcoal and White, S to XXL, with only the small Bitcoin21 logo on the front. You can pay directly in Bitcoin.
₿ Why Hal Finney of all people
Finney was no accidental user. He had worked on PGP, the encryption that made e-mail tap-proof for ordinary people for the first time, and kept working on it as a developer until his retirement in early 2011. In 2004 he built RPOW, a digital means of payment based on proofs of work. It worked, it just still needed a single server as its linchpin. When Satoshi's whitepaper appeared four years later, Finney was one of the few who immediately understood what had been solved there.
Hence the year in the motif. 2009 does not stand for the invention of Bitcoin, but for the moment it started running, and for the year in which Finney was still running himself.
How far ahead he thought shows in a forum post from the end of 2010: Bitcoin on its own could not carry every payment in the world, it would need a second, lighter layer on top, and in the end Bitcoin would be the hard money underneath. Written years before Lightning existed.
He kept programming even when his hands had long stopped playing along, via an eye tracker, by his own estimate around fifty times slower than before. In 2013 he published the post “Bitcoin and me” in the BitcoinTalk forum. Since January 2022 there has been the Running Bitcoin Challenge, led by his wife Fran Finney: a half marathon around the anniversary of the tweet, Hal's favorite distance. Donations go to ALS research, paid in Bitcoin.
We have written down the whole story: Running Bitcoin: Hal Finney and the two words that started it all.
🏃 What the running shirt is made for
Running in the heat, indoors, the gym, everywhere cotton soaks itself full and gets heavy. The fabric passes moisture to the outside, the mesh panels let the heat out where it would otherwise build up. On cool days it works as a first layer under a Hoodie or a jacket.
What it is not: a cotton shirt for a day at the office. That is what the Bitcoin T-Shirts are for.
If the motif is too big for you: The same shirt is available with the classic lettering on the back, the Bitcoin Running Shirt Running Bitcoin. And if you would rather wear “Proof of Work” for training, take the Bitcoin Sports Shirt.

🧺 Care for the performance shirt
- Machine wash (40 °C), wash with similar colors
- Tumble dry at low temperature
- Do not iron
- Do not dry clean
- Do not use fabric softener
- Wash before wearing
Why no fabric softener: it settles on the fibers like a film and takes from the fabric exactly what you bought it for, wicking moisture away. Washing inside out protects the print.

❓ Frequently asked questions about the Bitcoin Running Shirt Hal Finney
How do I find the right size?
Above you will find the size chart for this shirt. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one. In most cases that is the better choice. If you are unsure, just message us and we will help you out.
Is the motif embroidered or printed?
On this shirt everything is printed, the Bitcoin21 logo on the front and the large motif on the back. The print lies flat on the performance material and does not add texture. Embroidery would be wrong here anyway: it would perforate the mesh structure.
What is the difference from the other Bitcoin Running Shirt?
The shirt itself is identical: same fabric, same cut, same colors and sizes. Only the print on the back is different: here the sentence is a large motif, on the Bitcoin Running Shirt Running Bitcoin the lettering stands there typographically. On the front both carry the same small Bitcoin21 logo.
Who was Hal Finney?
A US-American cryptographer (1956–2014). He worked on the encryption software PGP, built a forerunner of digital money with RPOW in 2004 and was one of the very first to run a Bitcoin node and mine with it, by his own account the first person besides Satoshi Nakamoto. The sentence “Running bitcoin” of January 11, 2009 is his, and he was the recipient of the first Bitcoin transfer there ever was. More on this in our post Running Bitcoin: Hal Finney and the two words that started it all.
What if the size does not fit?
You have a 14-day right of withdrawal from receipt. Send the shirt back and order the right size. Return shipping costs are borne by the buyer. A look at the measurements above saves you the trip in most cases.
Can I pay with Bitcoin?
Yes. Alongside the usual payment methods you can pay us directly in Bitcoin. For a shop that brings Bitcoin onto clothing, anything else would ring hollow.
